M&M Software and Meta-Level Simplify the Digital Exchange of Technical Product Data

M&M Software and Meta-Level Software AG help machinery and equipment manufacturers structure, clearly assign, and efficiently use technical product information. The foundation: the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). It cuts search time, eliminates version conflicts, and creates the basis for applications like the Digital Product Passport (DPP), Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), and digital service processes.

In many companies, critical content lives scattered across documents, folders, and different IT systems. At the same time, requirements for availability and traceability keep rising. Manufacturers, operators, and service organizations must pull this data from multiple sources, keep it current, and make it available for different use cases.

M&M Software and Meta-Level address this by combining their AAS-based solutions. Thomas Neumann, Head of Business Development at M&M Software, explains: “Together with Meta-Level, we combine automated preparation of product data with a user-friendly interface. That lets companies provide product information efficiently and use it in a targeted way.”

Asset Administration Shell as the Foundation

The Asset Administration Shell—AAS for short—is a product’s digital ID card. It brings technical content into a consistent structure and makes it accessible across system boundaries.

The AAS.TwinEngine from M&M Software automatically creates and updates Asset Administration Shells based on existing product and enterprise data. The AAS Suite from Meta-Level complements this with capabilities for modeling, managing, and visualizing content. Together, they provide an end-to-end solution for creating, using, and delivering digital product information.

Real-World Example: Handover Documentation per VDI 2770

One concrete use case is the digital handover of technical documentation—so‑called Handover Documentation. This includes operating manuals, maintenance documents, certificates, and other technical documents and specifications.

VDI 2770 provides a standardized foundation for this. Documents are classified in a standard way, described with metadata, and handed over in a structured format. The Asset Administration Shell can additionally link this information to the specific product or digital twin. As a result, users get fast access to up‑to‑date documents and avoid time‑consuming searches.

A Common Foundation for Additional Use Cases

Combining both products makes it possible to automatically convert product data from existing sources into AAS structures, model it for business use, and present it so teams can act on it. This creates an open data foundation for exchanging technical product information. Additional sources, applications, and components can be connected step by step.

Beyond document handover, the solution also supports use cases such as:

  • Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)
  • Digital Product Passport (DPP)
  • Digital service and maintenance processes
