Dunkermotoren: Agile Digitalization - Test automation for future motor generations.

In 2017, AMETEK Dunkermotoren decided to completely overhaul its test and inspection software. The goal: a future-ready solution tailored to the testing requirements of upcoming motor
generations.

The new system needed to integrate various devices such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and label printers for motor, encoder, and brake testing. Additionally, the software had to be modular, easily expandable, and deployable on new test stations to keep pace with evolving motor technology and testing demands.

Instead of creating an extensive requirements specification, Dunkermotoren opted for an agile approach. However, the developers in Bonndorf had little experience with SCRUM and were already engaged in ongoing development projects, making it difficult to manage a parallel software redevelopment.

To bridge the gap, Dunkermotoren brought in M&M Software GmbH from St. Georgen as their digitalization partner.

First, we introduced the SCRUM methodology in the development department and trained the employees at Dunkermotoren. A consultant from M&M Software defined the SCRUM roles and supported the team on-site. The team quickly adopted the methodology for internal projects as well.

Developing the testing and inspection software was challenging due to the complexity of the machines and test systems. Various interfaces, components, and devices had to be integrated. To ensure a modular and future-proof software architecture, configuration files were reviewed and discussed with the customer. It quickly became clear that not all systems were fully interconnected and that test and inspection plans needed to be processed as XML files. 

Requirements such as calibrating the measurement systems and evaluating and verifying the results were implemented collaboratively using an agile approach. To ensure simple configuration and operation of the test stations, we developed an intuitive user interface together. M&M Software supported the architecture and design process with its own UI experts and quickly presented initial design proposals. This expertise played a key role in bringing the software to production readiness.

Further product improvements are continuously integrated into the software solution to expand the test software and incorporate additional components, systems, and machines.

Thanks to M&M Software, Dunkermotoren was able to quickly and efficiently implement the agile development process alongside an ongoing development project. This tailored approach helped Dunkermotoren understand the SCRUM process and apply it to other development projects.

By involving M&M Software early on, the necessary expertise for developing the test station software was built, and the requirements from the departments were quickly implemented. This saved time on lengthy coordination meetings and accelerated the completion and commissioning of the solution.

Functionally, Dunkermotoren benefits from the easy operation and configuration of the test station software, as well as the ability to calibrate its own testing equipment without external service
providers.
