Visualization and analysis of energy data in the smart grid

The world of energy is changing: whether through photovoltaic systems on rooftops, solar parks or wind turbines. In the past, energy was mostly centralized, e.g. produced in a power plant and delivered from there constantly to the consumer. Today, energy is being generated more and more decentralized by the consumers themselves and the surplus stored in the grid. That means an increasing challenge for energy suppliers and their energy networks. An intelligent energy grid (Smart Grid) knows exactly how much is being produced and consumed.

Project description

SWO Netz GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Stadtwerke Osnabrück AG and is responsible for planning, construction and operation of the infrastructure in urban areas as well as parts of the Osnabrück region. Their field of activity comprises the divisions of electricity, natural gas, water, effluent, telecommunications and street lighting.

With the "Smart Grid Data Collector" developed by M&M Software as part of a pilot project, SWO Netz GmbH is preparing for the power distribution of the future. Parallel to the existing telecontrol solution, a WAGO PFC Controller collects additional energy data and sends it to the WAGO Cloud, which was developed on the basis of Microsoft Azure. In parallel to the existing telecontrol solution, a WAGO PFC Controller collects additional energy data and sends it to the WAGO Cloud, which was developed based on Microsoft Azure. Stadtwerke Osnabrück relies on Microsoft Power BI to evaluate the large amount of data in a timely and efficient manner. This tool is perfect for analyzing and visualizing large amounts of data. In this way, data can be collected on the condition and behavior of the network in order, for example, to derive forecasts for the future or to check the effectiveness of measures. Thus, data on the state and behavior of the network can be collected to derive, for example, forecasts for the future or to check the effectiveness of measures.

WAGO Cloud provides an additional user interface for monitoring the WAGO components used. For example, alarms can be defined and the employees of SWO Netz GmbH can be informed promptly in the event of malfunctions. This enables the employees of SWO Netz GmbH to ensure the stability of the power grid also in the future.
